Letterpress Printing Press

Letterpress printing presses are commonly used for roll-to-roll label production, including single-color and multi-color printing jobs. The ink is first applied to a raised printing plate, and the image is then pressed onto the material as it moves through the printing unit. For multi-color work, several printing stations can be arranged one after another, with registration control keeping the colors in the correct position. Depending on the application, the press can work in full-rotary or intermittent mode, and drying or curing units can be added after printing. Letterpress printing machines are commonly used for self-adhesive labels and other roll-based products that need a good print quality and accurate color registration.

What Is Letterpress Printing?
Letterpress is a relief printing process in which the image area of the printing plate sits higher than the non-printing area. Ink is applied to the raised surface, and the image is transferred to the substrate when the plate and material come into contact under pressure. Modern industrial letterpress presses commonly use photopolymer plates and can print on both paper-based and specialty roll materials.
Ink rollers first apply a controlled layer of ink to the raised image area of the plate. The substrate then passes between the printing plate and the impression cylinder, where pressure helps transfer the image onto the material. On multi-color letterpress printing machines, the web moves through several printing stations so each color can be applied in sequence.
Letterpress can produce sharp text, fine lines, and strong solid colors, which is one reason it has remained useful for reel-fed self-adhesive label production. It is also suitable for various types of substrates besides just conventional paper, including films and other specialty materials when the press, plate, and ink system are properly matched.
